Empowering Black Women in the Workplace: A Roadmap to Success

In a world where mass layoffs, AI-driven industries, and hostile work environments threaten the very existence of Black women's careers, two veteran executives have come together to update a leadership book that has been a beacon of hope for nearly two decades. Rhonda Joy McLean and Elaine Meryl Brown, co-authors of 'The Next Little Black Book of Success,' share their insights on what it takes to survive and thrive in the modern workplace.

A Legacy of Leadership
The book's origins date back to 2010, when Marsha Haygood, a pioneering figure in Black women's leadership, partnered with McLean and Brown to create a guide specifically tailored for Black women. Since then, the book has sold over 60,000 copies, offering a roadmap to success that addresses the unique challenges faced by Black women in the workplace. With the recent passing of Haygood, her legacy lives on through the updated edition, which tackles the pressing issues of loss, leadership, and resilience.

The Skills That Matter
McLean and Brown emphasize that it's not just about acquiring hard skills to get hired; rather, it's the soft skills – such as self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and adaptability – that truly sustain a career. Their mantra, 'the first person you lead is yourself,' highlights the importance of personal growth and development in achieving success. The authors also acknowledge the generational differences in the workplace, recognizing that each generation has its unique strengths and challenges.

Navigating Uncertainty
The updated edition addresses the current landscape of mass layoffs, AI-driven industries, and a hostile work environment for Black women. McLean notes, 'We really try to anticipate changes in the workplace, changes in the workforce – we talk about AI. We talk about trying to be an authentic black woman in the workplace.' The authors offer practical advice on how to navigate these challenges, including building relationships, expanding one's network, and developing a growth mindset.

A Call to Action
As the number of Black women laid off or pushed out of the workforce continues to rise – with over 600,000 affected since early 2025 – McLean and Brown's book serves as a timely reminder that leadership is not just about achieving success but also about creating a supportive community. Their message is clear: by focusing on soft skills, building relationships, and embracing change, Black women can not only survive but thrive in the modern workplace.

In a world where uncertainty and adversity threaten to derail careers, 'The Next Little Black Book of Success' offers a beacon of hope for Black women. With its updated insights on loss, leadership, and resilience, this book is more relevant than ever. As McLean and Brown so eloquently put it, 'This book is a roadmap to the future.' By embracing their message and taking action, Black women can chart their own course to success and create a brighter future for themselves and those around them.
