Black Public Media Honors Trailblazers Stanley Nelson and Marcia Smith

Stanley Nelson and Marcia Smith are Black Public MediaIn a celebration of excellence in storytelling, Black Public Media (BPM) has named Stanley Nelson and Marcia Smith as its 2026 Trailblazers. This prestigious honor recognizes their outstanding contributions to the field of public media, where they have consistently pushed boundaries and shattered glass ceilings.

A Legacy of Excellence
Stanley Nelson is widely regarded as the foremost chronicler of the African American experience in nonfiction film today. With a body of work that spans over three decades, he has consistently delivered documentaries that combine compelling narratives with rich historical detail, shedding new light on both familiar and under-explored aspects of the American past. His films have aired on PBS, and he has received numerous honors, including a Peabody Award for his body of work in 2016.

A Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
BPM's commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident in its PitchBLACK initiative, which has awarded over $2 million to 26 film and immersive projects since 2015. Many of these projects have gone on to national primetime premieres on public media broadcast and streaming platforms. The organization continues to address historical, contemporary, and systemic challenges that impede the development and distribution of Black stories.

A Tribute to Trailblazers
In honor of Nelson and Smith's remarkable accomplishments, BPM will present a two-week online retrospective of their films from April 27 to May 10. The retrospective may include some of their most notable works, such as 'We Want the Funk!' (2025), 'The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution' (2015), and 'Freedom Riders' (2010). All PitchBLACK registrants will receive free on-demand access to the slate of films on the BPM website throughout the streaming window.

A Future Shaped by Visionary Content Creators
BPM supports the development of visionary content creators and distributes stories about the global Black experience to inspire a more equitable and inclusive future. With its 45+ years of experience, BPM has addressed the needs of unserved and underserved audiences, producing and distributing original content that has won numerous awards, including five Emmys, 10 Peabodys, and an Oscar nomination.

The recognition of Stanley Nelson and Marcia Smith as Black Public Media's 2026 Trailblazers is a testament to their dedication to storytelling and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in public media. As BPM continues to support visionary content creators and distribute stories that inspire a more equitable future, it remains an essential partner in shaping the narrative of our time.
