When I See Me was born out of a desire to bridge the literacy gap in communities of color. The movement's signature A Book in Every Bag program has already reached over 1,000 children, providing them with free books to start or grow their home libraries.

The new journals, designed for ages 5-12, encourage young people to explore their thoughts, celebrate their strengths, express their emotions, and dream boldly through guided writing prompts and creative activities.

The Third Annual When I See Me Children's Book Fair on July 25, 2026, will bring together authors, educators, families, community organizations, and volunteers for a day of storytelling, literacy activities, social-emotional learning, and family engagement. The event is free and open to the public, with admission available at the Dayton Metro Library – West Branch.
