Empowering Young Minds: Black Author Launches Journals to Foster Confidence and Creativity

Black Author Launches Children’s Journals Helping Young Readers See Their Worth and Write Their Own StoriesImagine a world where every child sees themselves as the hero of their own story. For Valerie J. Lewis Coleman, this vision has become a reality through her groundbreaking literacy movement, When I See Me. With the launch of three new guided journals, Coleman is taking her mission to the next level, empowering young readers to write their own stories and unlock their limitless potential.

A Movement Born from Passion
When I See Me was born out of a desire to bridge the literacy gap in communities of color. Coleman's initiative has grown into one of Dayton's most impactful community literacy initiatives, connecting children with culturally relevant books and diverse authors. The movement's signature A Book in Every Bag program has already reached over 1,000 children, providing them with free books to start or grow their home libraries.

The Power of Reflection
Coleman believes that when children see themselves reflected in what they read and write, something profound happens. They begin to believe their ideas matter, their voices deserve to be heard, and their future is filled with possibilities. The new journals, designed for ages 5-12, encourage young people to explore their thoughts, celebrate their strengths, express their emotions, and dream boldly through guided writing prompts and creative activities.

A Celebration of Identity and Potential
The When I See Me Journal Collection is more than just a tool for literacy; it's a celebration of identity and potential. Coleman's vision is to help children move from seeing themselves in stories to believing they have stories worth telling. The journals are designed to be a safe space for children to celebrate who they are while imagining who they can become.

A Community Comes Together
The Third Annual When I See Me Children's Book Fair on July 25, 2026, will bring together authors, educators, families, community organizations, and volunteers for a day of storytelling, literacy activities, social-emotional learning, and family engagement. The event is free and open to the public, with admission available at the Dayton Metro Library – West Branch.

Valerie J. Lewis Coleman's When I See Me movement is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in empowering young minds. With the launch of the new journals and the upcoming book fair, Coleman is taking her mission to new heights, inspiring children to see themselves as heroes of their own stories and unlocking their limitless potential.
